Tach signal for Porsche

Postby Nick » Mon Apr 02, 2007 11:45 am

To get a tach signal from a Porche 996 Turbo tap into wire E-6 (Green with blue tracer) from the ECU. This is the No 1 ignition pulse wire and will give a good signal to Traqmate.

This also works for a 997S and may work on most others, at least 996 and newer. The colors are the same on these two, I don't know about others.

There are five plugs into the ECU and E is the last one to the outside of the car, but it's really pretty obvious once you get to the box.

Good luck!

Tach signal for Porsche

I ran the system at the track last weekend and found that it all worked just fine. I made up several vids and the tach data was solid.

I have a 1984 911 Carrera. I got the RPM from the black and purple wire that goes into the back of the Tach, Works great.

Porsche has used several generations of the Bosche Motronic DME since the introduction of the 1984 911 Carrera. The nice thing is that Pin 6 of the DME is consitently used for RPM signal through the Carrera years to 1989, the 964 model years, and the 996 model years to 2006.

The 997 model introduced substantial changes to the EMS, and the whole brave new world of fly-by-wire throttle control. I'm just not sure that P6 is still RPM on the 997 ECU, but its high probability. I'm sure there are some 997 pilots out there who can verify this.
